Nez Perce Tribe Lapwai — 08/11/23The Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) Wapaayatat AmeriCorps VISTA project, in collaboration with Wisteqneemit, as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Carlson will work Tasha Carlson.

Carlson, who is a Nez Perce, Yakama, and Cayuse descendant, is the daughter of Wendy Mahoney (parents Jeannette Virginia Broncheau-Pinkham and James Samuel Boone) and Kenneth Carlson (parents Jim and Velda Carlson). Her mother is enrolled with the Nez Perce Tribe and a descendant from the Chief Joseph Band.

Carlson is a Marine Corps Veteran after serving eight years in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan and Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon. When asked what she was looking forward to doing in the next year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Carlson shared that OEF and OIR inspired her to pursue community development on the Nez Perce reservation.

She is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and Business Management from Lewis-Clark State College. While serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member, Carlson shared one of her goals is to also enhance the quality of life for Nez Perce Tribal members while continuing the tradition of reciprocity at Wisteqneemit. Growing up in Lewiston, Idaho, Carlson shared her dreams of giving back to the community. “It’s an inspiration to be from a Tribal community that is not only is encouraging but passionate about civil and public service.”

As a part of the mission for Wisteqneemit, as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Carlson will work to help deliver project goals in the eradication of poverty through community education and outreach and engagement. Founded in 2016, Wisteqneemit, as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Carlson will work is a tribal nonprofit that works with community programs to further the Nez Perce gift of giving through grants and public education.
